Brief 5: EOYS Brand Proposal - Poster Development

Developing a design direction is heavily informed through the name and concept of my EOYS proposal. My research into previous successful degree shows and extended inspiration into contemporary design informs a strong direction to begin creating a range of initial ideas. Due to the short turnaround of the initial pitch I had to work with an improvised design process jumping straight into digital experimentation as I can work quicker on photoshop than with pen and paper.

Concept 1:
The first direction works with a duel composition, utilising a 50/50 split between photography and block colour. This neatly frames the type and draws the users eye to the content without making this appear an afterthought. The imagery depicts books at all different angles and is used to connote an end of school celebration. With everyone deserting their text books to celebrate the process of the year. While this concept works aesthetic contextually it may not be as appropriate for an independent arts institution who doesn't deal as much with books and focuses more on the expression of practice. The colour palette and composition are refined and minimal picking colours from the image to inform the background and text colour which ties these two elements together and aids the continuity of the design.

Concept 2:
Inspired by researching into contemporary design processes I looked at new digital programmes and how they are shaping what we can do with design, programmes such as cinema 4D and 3D rendering software transforms the texture and depth designers can embed into the 2D medium of posters. This concept is impaired by waves and water, this is always changing, moving, and creating new forms, This works appropriately with the concept of limited editions as each waves is totally unique and is engaging to the educational context of the brief as creatives we are always changing, improving, and growing our practice. The tonal colour palette is effective in creating a bold piece, the imagery can be manipulated creating a series based from the original image with varying waves to further adhere to the concept. Creating bespoke creative copy and information for the poster is neatly arranged at the bottom to create a perception of space within the posters composition.

Concept 3:
The third concept works with an alternative though process focusing on the exhibition itself as a platform to highlight student work,  Created a grid with a large space in the centre to display student work within the physical poster. This will ensure the focus remains on the students while making the poster series unique with a run of varying student work from each course demonstrating the broad variety of talent within the institution. This also acts as a small preview for the event with the poster promoting the type of thing that will be on show. Similarly to concept 1 the background colour is colour picked from the image to create continuity and I have kept the typographic arrangement from concept 2 as I feel this works effectively to present the appropriate information without making this a focal point of the overall aesthetic.

Feedback:
As the EOYS represents all the students within the college I wanted to make sure the direction I took appealed to a range of students from all courses. Creating a small, informal focus group I was able to acquire a good amount of feedback to develop the poster into a final resolution. There was strong support for each concept with a range of positives for each however the consensus of the focus group was that concept 3 had the most opportunities to be developed into a final resolution. The use of student work was universally liked by all of the students ranging across courses as this gave each course a spotlight focus within the EOYS' branding. This also works appropriately with the concept creating limited editions runs of posters with differing designs to showcase the breadth of talent the exhibition will show.
