Brief 4: Record Store Day - Inspiration: Record Store Day Posters

Record Store Day posters:
The first and most obvious source of inspiration was to research previous Record Store Day posters, to gain a holistic understanding of the composition, audience and aesthetic. From these I identified a very illustrative approach that has a very informal and creative tone of voice that will appeal to the target audience that incorporates a bold and playful use of colour.

The first example I analysed played with a humorous concept, that will engage the target audience while promoting the role of the physical record store within a contemporary  society. The colour palette is particularly engaging utilising a bold scheme that complements  one another and lends itself particularly well to the playful concept of the poster.

This poster is used for local cafes to show their support for record store day and in turn twins the independent business with record culture creating opportunities to grow their customer base. The concept of the poster cleverly incorporates the iconography of the vinyl within a coffee cup to represent the posters environment. The aesthetic again plays with a bold use of colour that is simplified to a two colour scheme plus stock due to the production values of the print which show suggestions of screen printing that reflects the nature of vinyl music appropriately demonstrating the attention to detail and informed production decisions.

In the third example I particularly like how the concept of the poster is directly themed around the physical record store itself making it unique and allowing a more direct marketing strategy. Utilising the name of the record store 'rat record' paired with the illustrations allows an instantly identifiable store to promote the event, commercially this would work particularly well if there are more than one record stores holding events for World Record Store day. The vibrant orange instantly engaging the audience and illustrative style is quirky yet playful.
