Preparation is key with this brief and an accurate awareness of time management helps to ensure the processes run as smoothly as possible. Becoming familiar with the ceramic workshop staff was also essential in my exploration within different ceramic processes as their tuition was invaluable in learning a host of new skills.
The first process I engaged with is the most traditional, exploring hand thrown forms using a potters wheel. I was given an introduction of how to use the machinery and a demonstration outlining the basics of this process, which included learning how to centre the clay and create basic forms. Through engaging with the workshop staff found that this process takes years to perfect with a typically internship within the tradition field lasting 6 years until their skills are refined enough to be considered an expert of their trade.
I found this process extremely difficult to master, I became relatively competent at entering the clay however pulling it up into a form was still difficult for me to grasp, I initially tried to make a small cup/vase however after several foiled attempts made a plate instead. Physically engaging with the process allowed me to understand just how difficult the technique is to master and gave me a much more refined appreciation of the process and hand thrown ceramic forms.
