Brief 7: Up Yer Sleeve - Track Research

Having been assigned my track the first stage in my research was to listen and investigate the tracks social, cultural, and commercial successes in order to inform a holistic understanding of the subject and implement an appropriate design strategy.

First Impressions: My first impressions of the track are of the strength within Sharon Jones voice, It is inftely soulful with expressively funky elements supported by the Dap Kings providing a strong ballad style to develop. The strengths within the physical works and Sharon's voice inspires a bold resolution to develop initially my inspiration turns towards the use of bold colour and strong imagery to provide an accurate representation of the track.

Contextual Research: 100 Days, 100 Nights was released in 2007 and contains strong influences from sixties era funk and afrobeats, intent of creating an old school sound reminiscent of the original funk of the 1960s. The lyrics themselves are written about love, making reference to this being the number of days needed for a man's heart to unfold. The music video is directed by Adam Elias Buncher, was shot exclusively using authentic vintage cameras from the 1950s, and in a simple style references back to the cultural influences of the track.

There is no original artwork for the track as it was never released as a single however is the lead track of their 2007 album also entitled 100 days 100 nights, this is produced in a fairly simple style, the bold orange background succeeds in vocalising the strength of Sharon's voice however the overall aesthetic lacks a sense of engagement. The Combination of type is moderately engaging however the main challenge of the brief is to reinterpret the track into an exhibition piece that will engage a different target audience of creatives predominantly with interests in Graphic Design.
