The response to the brief explores ceramic processes in a much more practical context than I first anticipated, The use of purely primary research is appropriate to the context of the practical investigation as to fully explore the differing techniques within a range of ceramic processes I was required to physically engage with these processes to holistically understand how these utilise a range of skillsets and processes. Creating an extensive understanding of these ceramic processes allowed me to learn a vast range of new skills not only in ceramic processes that are also transferable across into my current practice such as time management, communication skills, and problem solving.
Having fully engaged with the research process the next stage in the brief was to create an appropriate graphic response, written into the brief as purposely vague this allows no preconceptions to develop and allow the process of research to determine a final outcome. Based on my engagement with the research I developed a series of posters that document my experience within these ceramic processes. Identifying a postmodern aesthetic as a design direction for the poster series works effectively in humanising the process creating an abstract interpretation of my experience which is less concerned with the legibility and more about the expression within the final resolution.
Developing this aesthetic I self directed photoshoots to capture the final forms of each process and colour switched elements from the shoot to create an aesthetic colour palettes that easily defines each posters as a set. Continuity is important within the series as although each poster works independently and documents a unique process it is important the the series is holistically reflective as a set. This incorporated a singular typeface and use of a single colour with each poster to ensure a sense of synergy between each design. Developing each poster in isolates the aesthetic of each poster is inspired by each physical process for example the slip casting poster takes aesthetic utilising the form of the mould to create an abstract shape filled with text, this allows each poster to work independently and ensures the aesthete is contextually appropriate yet still works within the series.
The brief achieves a strong body of research that is thoroughly engaged with to fully understand the subject matter. This is then developed into a sophisticated graphic response that is appropriate too each individual process and reflective of my body practical research.
