With a strong playful direction established as part of my initial experimentation, I took steps to develop this further in order to generate a sophisticated design concept that would succeed in answering the problems established within the brief. Extending upon previous development I implemented a colour scheme into the character identities utilising red, white, and blue as this contrasts the greenall's brand colour utilised within the type and background of the poster and reinforces a sense of British nationalism as required within the brief.
Reflecting back upon the first design, I was unsure if this felt too busy and overcomplicated, even though the aesthetic was to represent a sociable party environment this could distract the audience from the clear intention of directing their gaze towards the product. Creating a range of alternatives in preparation for peer feedback I simplified the design striping the characters back to a single row inline with the bottle to create a more harmonious focal point. The addition of umbrellas reinforces the concept which the body language and playful personality evoked through the illustration suggests you can still have fun in the rain.
As an outtake of this development I was strangely attracted to the simplicity of the background used in isolation, the use of raindrops and bottle created an instant focal point ensuring the product is the primary focus of within the posters composition, Although missing something at this stage I included it within my development to ask peers how this can be developed further, as I am interested to see how they feel I can extend upon this concept.
Feedback:
Using studio time as a proficient means of receiving feedback from my peers is an important part of my design process. Taking initiative to organise peer lead critiques provides opportunity to ensure the resolution is appropriate as possible to the brief. Showing my current development the concept was praised for utilising a British moment without being cliche which wouldn't appeal to a contemporary millennial audience. Responding to my design direction, students liked the aesthetic of the illustrations however felt the composition was far too busy on the whole, it was suggested 'I don't know here to look first, its just a bit too confusing especially at a glance'. Suggestions for improvements looked at reinforcing the concept through the aesthetic one student suggested 'you could use umbrellas more within the aesthetic to reinforce the concept 'come rain or shine' this would create a more linear progression from concept to aesthetic. This was extended upon stating ' I like the illustrations I'm just not sure if they work in this brief'. This feedback can now be translated into further development in order to extend upon the design direction to ensure an appropriate resolution.
